Controlled rollout of updates for applications installed on client devices

A server computing device for controlling a rollout of an update for an application installed on client devices over a network, the server computing device comprising:

• at least one processor;
• and
• at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the server computing device to implement a service configured to:
• receive a request from a client device to access the update,
• determine whether the client device is authorized to access the update during a rollout period for the update based on, at least in part:
• a user identifier corresponding to a user account associated with the client device, and
• a version identifier corresponding to the update, and
• transmit a response to the client device when the client device is authorized to access the update.

At least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium configured to store instructions that, when executed by at least one processor included in a server computing device, cause the server computing device to control a rollout of an update for an application installed on a client device, by carrying out steps that include:

• receiving a request to identify whether the update is available to be installed on the client device during the rollout;
• calculating a hash value based on, at least in part:
• a user identifier corresponding to a user account associated with the client device, and
• a version identifier corresponding to the update;
• determining whether the update for the application is available to be installed on the client device by comparing the hash value to a threshold value based on a number of days that have elapsed since the update was released;
• and
• in response to determining that the update for the application is available to be installed on the client device, transmitting a response to the client device.
