Adaptive test method and designs for low power mox sensor

A device, comprising:

• a substrate;
• a first heater on the substrate;
• a first semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) film on the first heater, the first SMO film having a first surface area;
• a second heater on the substrate;
• and
• a second SMO film on the second heater;
• the second SMO film having a second surface area that is greater than the first surface area.

A method, comprising:

• activating a first gas sensor, the first gas sensor including a first semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) film configured to detect a first gas concentration range;
• measuring a concentration of a gas in a surrounding environment;
• determining whether the concentration of the gas is outside of the first gas concentration range;
• deactivating, in response to determining that the concentration of the gas is outside of the first gas concentration range, the first gas sensor;
• and
• activating, in response to determining that the concentration of the gas is outside of the first gas concentration range, a second gas sensor, the second gas sensor including a second SMO film configured to detect a second gas concentration range.
