Abstract
A method for detecting and counting particles suspended in fluids, such as bacteria suspended in urine, utilizing dynamic features of the suspended particles and employing light scattering measurements. The disclosed method is suitable for determining the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics. A cuvette for detecting bacteria in fluids, which is especially suited for the light scattering measurements, is provided.
Claims2
A method for detecting bacteria in a biological fluid employing light scattering measurements, wherein a portion of said fluid is illuminated in a cuvette by a beam of coherent light having an axis, said method comprising the steps of
- i) filtering an untreated sample of said fluid for excluding particles larger than said bacteria;
- ii) making at least one measurement of the intensity of light scattered by said sample of fluid at least at one point, wherein said at least one point is spaced apart from said axis;
- iii) matching said at least one measurement with a calibration curve, and
- wherein said cuvette is substantially transparent to said illuminating beam.
