Method of controlling a wind turbine generator

A controller, comprising:

• a memory containing code;
• and
• a processor configured to access the code in the memory and, upon executing the code, performing an operation for controlling a wind turbine generator based on a condition of a power converter or a component forming part of a power converter in the wind turbine generator, the operation comprising:
• determining a condition of the power converter or the component forming part of a power converter;
• comparing the condition to a predetermined threshold;
• and
• determining, based on a derate factor, an active power limit and a reactive power limit of the wind turbine generator if the condition substantially equals or exceeds the predetermined threshold.

A wind turbine, comprising:

• a tower;
• a nacelle disposed on the tower;
• a generator disposed in the nacelle;
• a rotor extending from the nacelle and having a plurality of blades connected thereto;
• and
• a controller configured to perform an operation for controlling the generator based on a condition of a power converter or a component forming part of a power converter in the generator, the operation comprising:
• determining a condition of the power converter or the component forming part of a power converter;
• comparing the condition to a predetermined threshold;
• and
• determining, based on a derate factor, an active power limit and a reactive power limit of the wind turbine generator if the condition substantially equals or exceeds the predetermined threshold.
