Abstract
A method of producing advanced carbon materials can include providing coal to a processing facility, beneficiating the coal to remove impurities from the coal, processing the beneficiated coal to produce a pitch, and treating the pitch to produce an advanced carbon material such as carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, resins, polymers, biomaterials, or other carbon materials.
Claims20
A method of producing an advanced carbon material, comprising:
- providing an amount of coal to a processing facility;
- beneficiating the amount of coal at the processing facility to remove impurities therefrom;
- processing the beneficiated amount of coal at the processing facility to produce an amount of pitch from at least some of the amount of coal;
- and
- treating at least some of the amount of pitch at the processing facility to produce the advanced carbon material.
A method of producing carbon fibers from coal at a processing facility, comprising:
- providing coal to the processing facility;
- beneficiating the coal to remove impurities therefrom;
- subjecting the beneficiated coal to one or more of a pyrolysis process, a direct liquefaction process, an indirect liquefaction process, a membrane separation process, and an electric arc process to thereby produce a pitch;
- and
- treating the pitch to produce one or more advanced carbon materials.
The method of claim 17, wherein the one or more advanced carbon materials include one or more of resins, pitch, carbon fibers, or graphene.
A mesophase coal pitch comprising at least 90% of aromatic hydrocarbons.
The mesophase pitch of claim 30, wherein the aromatic hydrocarbons comprise polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
