A method for treating or preventing retinitis pigmentosa, age related macular degeneration, myopic maculopathy, macular dystrophy, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis or retinal detachment in a subject in need therefor or at risk, comprising the step of administering to said subject an effective amount of a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleic acid sequence, wherein the nucleic acid sequence encodes a chimeric protein comprising an amino acid sequence of an ion transport receptor rhodopsin derived from a microorganism of the Gloeobacter genus and an amino acid sequence of a G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin derived from bovine or human, wherein the chimeric protein comprises an amino acid sequence of at least one of a second loop on the cytoplasm side and a third loop on the cytoplasm side of the amino acid sequence of the microorganism derived ion transport receptor rhodopsin substituted with an amino acid sequence of at least one of a second loop on the cytoplasm side and a third loop on the cytoplasm side of the G protein-coupled receptor rhodopsin.
