## Abstract

The disclosed subject matter provides techniques for managing negotiation of power saving mode (PSM) parameters between a user equipment (UE) and core network device of a wireless communication network. In this regard, a method is provided that includes facilitating establishing, by a device comprising a processor, a wireless communication link with a network device of a wireless network. The method can further include, based on a determination that a power saving mode retry protocol for the device is enabled, determining, by the device, a number of times the network device previously instructed the device to use network values for power saving mode timers instead of device values for the power saving mode timers in association with the device operating in a power saving mode.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method, comprising:
determining, by a device operatively coupled to a processor, a number of times a network device of a wireless communication network has previously instructed the device to use a network value for a power saving mode timer instead of a device value for the power saving mode timer in association with the device operating in a power saving mode; and
in response to a determination that the number of times exceeds a threshold retry number, sending, by the device to the network device, a request to use the network value for the power saving mode timer in association with the device operating in the power saving mode.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the determination comprises first determination and wherein the determining the number of times is responsive to a second determination that a power saving mode retry protocol for the device is enabled.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the network value for the power saving mode timer was previously received by the device from the network device in response to a previous request, wherein the previous request was sent by the device to the network device, for authorization to use the device value for the power saving mode timer in association with the device operating in the power saving mode, and wherein the device previously employed the network value for the power saving mode timer in association with the device operating in the power saving mode.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the sending the request comprises sending an attachment message to the network device, and wherein the attachment message comprises the network value for the power saving mode timer.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the determination comprises a first determination, wherein the request comprises a first request, and wherein the method further comprises:
in response to a second determination that the number of times does not exceed the threshold retry number, sending, by the device to the network device, a second request to use the device value for the power saving mode timer in association with the device operating in the power saving mode.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the sending the second request comprises sending an attachment message to the network device via a wireless communication link, and wherein the attachment message comprises the device value for the power saving mode timer.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the sending the second request comprises sending a tracking area update message to the network device via a wireless communication link, and wherein the tracking area update message comprises the device value power saving mode timer.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the power saving mode timer controls a duration of time that the device remains in an idle mode after disconnecting from the network device.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the power saving mode timer controls a duration of time that the device remains in a low power mode after entering an idle mode in response to disconnecting from the network device.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein the network device is a first network device, wherein, during the idle mode, the device receives wireless communications from the first network device or a second network device, and wherein, during the low power mode, the device is unable to receive the wireless communications from the first network device or the second network device.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
receiving, by the device from the network device, retry control information defining the threshold retry number, wherein the threshold retry number defines a threshold number of times the device is able to request first usage of the device value for the power saving mode timer after having been previously instructed to use the network value for the power saving mode timer.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, further comprising:
determining, by the device, based on a comparison of the number to the threshold retry number, whether to request the first usage of the device value or a second usage of the network value for power saving mode timer in association with the device operating in the power saving mode.

### Claim 13

An integrated circuit card device, comprising:
a processor, and
a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:
determining a number of times that a device, operatively coupled to the integrated circuit card device, was previously instructed by a network device of a wireless communication network to use a network value for a power saving mode parameter instead of a device value for the power saving mode parameter in connection with the device operating in a power saving mode; and
directing the device to send a request to the network device requesting usage of the network value in connection with the operating in the power saving mode based on the number being determined to be greater than or equal to a threshold retry number.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The integrated circuit card device of claim 13, wherein the determining the number of times is based on a determination that a power saving mode retry protocol is enabled.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The integrated circuit card device of claim 13, wherein the request is a first request and wherein the operations further comprise:
directing the device to send a second request to the network device requesting usage of the device value in connection with the operating in the power saving mode based on the number being determined to be less than the threshold retry number.
