## Abstract

A texture decompression method is described. The method comprises receiving a compressed texture block, determining a partition of pixels used for the compressed texture block, wherein the partition includes one or more disjoint subsets into which data in the compressed texture block is to be unpacked, unpacking data for each subset based on the determined partition, and decompressing each of the one or more disjoint subsets to form an approximation of an original texture block.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for performing texture decompression comprising:
receiving a compressed texture block;
determining a partition of pixels used for the compressed texture block, wherein the partition includes one or more disjoint subsets into which data in the compressed texture block is to be unpacked;
unpacking data for each subset based on the determined partition; and
decompressing each of the one or more disjoint subsets to form an approximation of an original texture block.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the compressed texture block represents the original texture block.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the partition provides an indication regarding a subdivision of uncompressed texture blocks into disjoint subsets prior to compression.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising determining a size and shape of the one or more disjoint subsets before decompressing each of the one or more disjoint subsets.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein a size, shape, and arrangement of the one or more disjoint subsets within the partition is variable.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more disjoint subsets within the partition have different sizes.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the unpacking includes extracting information from the block that is required to decompress the data stored in the one or more subsets within the partition of pixels.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the decompressing each of the one or more disjoint subsets is performed independently.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 further comprising applying the approximation to a rendered surface for display.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the partition of pixels is associated with a quality parameter that meets a pre-selected threshold.

### Claim 11

A computer processing system comprising:
a processor and a memory, wherein the processor is configured to:
receive a compressed texture block;
determine a partition of pixels used for the compressed texture block, wherein the partition includes one or more disjoint subsets into which data in the compressed texture block is to be unpacked;
unpack data for each subset based on the determined partition; and
decompress each of the one or more disjoint subsets to form an approximation of an original texture block.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The computer processing system of claim 11, wherein the compressed texture block represents the original texture block.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The computer processing system of claim 11, wherein the partition provides an indication regarding a subdivision of uncompressed texture blocks into disjoint subsets prior to compression.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The computer processing system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to:
determine a size and shape of the one or more disjoint subsets before decompressing each of the one or more disjoint subsets.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

The computer processing system of claim 11, wherein the one or more disjoint subsets within the partition have different sizes.

### Claim 17 (depends on 11)

The computer processing system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to extract information from the block that is required to decompress the data stored in the one or more subsets within the partition of pixels when unpacking data for each subset based on the determined partition.

### Claim 18 (depends on 11)

The computer processing system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to independently decompress each of the one or more disjoint subsets.

### Claim 19 (depends on 11)

The computer processing system of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to apply the approximation to a rendered surface for display.
