## Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a communication technique for converging an IoT technology with a 5G communication system for supporting a higher data transmission rate beyond a 4G system, and a system therefor. The present disclosure may be applied to an intelligent service (e.g., a smart home, a smart building, a smart city, a smart car or connected car, healthcare, digital education, retail business, a security and safety related service, or the like) on the basis of a 5G communication technology and an IoT related technology. Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for reselecting a beam and selecting a suitable beam to be camped on, by a terminal, in order to be provided with a service in a next generation mobile communication system operating on the basis of a beam. Disclosed according to an embodiment of the present invention are a method and an apparatus for performing the same, the method comprising the steps of: receiving system information including first beam selection priority information; receiving a radio resource control (RRC) message including second beam reselection priority information; identifying whether the terminal has camped on a suitable beam; and applying one of the first beam reselection priority information and second beam reselection priority information on the basis of the result of the identification.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of selecting a beam by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:
receiving system information including first beam reselection priority information;
receiving a radio resource control (RRC) message including second beam reselection priority information;
identifying whether the UE camps on a suitable beam; and
applying one of the first beam reselection priority information and the second beam reselection priority information based on a result of the identification.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein whether the UE camps on a suitable beam is identified based on beamforming capability of the UE.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the beamforming capability of the UE corresponds to at least one beamforming factor, and the beamforming capability is defined for each frequency band.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein a beamforming capability of the UE comprises at least one of a number of beams, a beam width, a gain of a beam, a maximum gain of a beam, an antenna pattern, an orientation of a beam, a resolution of beamforming, a maximum transmission power, or a beam sweeping length.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein if the UE does not camp on a suitable beam, the first beam reselection priority information is applied.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein if the UE camps on a suitable beam, the second beam reselection priority information is applied.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein, if the UE camps on a suitable beam and satisfies a preconfigured condition, the second beam reselection priority information is deleted.

### Claim 8

A user equipment (UE), comprising:
a transceiver configured to transmit and receive a signal; and
a controller coupled with the transceiver and configured to:
receive system information including first beam reselection priority information,
receive a radio resource control (RRC) message including second beam reselection priority information,
identify whether the UE camps on a suitable beam, and
apply one of the first beam reselection priority information and the second beam reselection priority information based on a result of the identification.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The UE as claimed in claim 8, wherein whether the UE camps on a suitable beam is identified based on beamforming capability of the UE.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The UE as claimed in claim 9, wherein the beamforming capability of the UE corresponds to at least one beamforming factor, and the beamforming capability is defined for each frequency band.

### Claim 11 (depends on 8)

The UE as claimed in claim 8, wherein a beamforming capability of the UE comprises at least one of a number of beams, a beam width, a gain of a beam, a maximum gain of a beam, an antenna pattern, an orientation of a beam, a resolution of beamforming, a maximum transmission power, or a beam sweeping length.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The UE as claimed in claim 8, wherein, if the UE does not camp on a suitable beam, the first beam reselection priority information is applied.

### Claim 13 (depends on 8)

The UE as claimed in claim 8, wherein, if the UE camps on a suitable beam, the second beam reselection priority information is applied.

### Claim 14 (depends on 8)

The UE as claimed in claim 8, wherein, if the UE camps on a suitable beam and satisfies a preconfigured condition, the second beam reselection priority information is deleted.
