## Abstract

A heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) combustion suppression system. The HVAC combustion suppression system includes a sensor that detects and emits a signal indicative of a refrigerant released from an HVAC system into an enclosed space. The system also includes a suppression component that blocks or reduces combustion of the refrigerant in the enclosed space, and a controller that receives the signal from the sensor. The controller in response to the signal activates the suppression component to suppress combustion of the refrigerant in the enclosed space.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) combustion suppression system, comprising:
a sensor configured to detect a refrigerant released from an HVAC system into an enclosed space and to emit a signal indicative of the refrigerant;
a suppression component configured suppress combustion of the refrigerant in the enclosed space; and
a controller configured to receive the signal from the sensor and actuate the suppression component to suppress combustion of the refrigerant in the enclosed space.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to actuate the suppression component in response to a detected concentration of the refrigerant in excess of a threshold concentration.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the suppression component comprises a blower, wherein the controller is configured to actuate the blower to draw the refrigerant out of the enclosed space and discharge the refrigerant into the atmosphere.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the suppression component comprises a pump configured to pump an inert gas from an inert gas supply into the enclosed space.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the suppression component comprises a valve configured to release a dry chemical from a dry chemical supply into the enclosed space.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is a chemical sensor, an optical sensor, or both.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor is a first sensor, and the system comprises a second sensor configured to detect burning of the refrigerant.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The system of claim 7, wherein the first and second sensors are coupled to an air duct upstream from an evaporator coil of the HVAC system.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the enclosed space is an air duct of the HVAC system.

### Claim 10

A heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) combustion suppression system, comprising:
a sensor configured to detect a combustion event in an enclosed space and to emit a signal indicative of the combustion event;
a suppression component configured to extinguish the combustion event; and
a controller configured to receive the signal from the sensor and activate the suppression component to extinguish the combustion event in the enclosed space.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The system of claim 10, wherein the suppression component comprises a blower, wherein the controller is configured to activate the blower to remove a refrigerant from the enclosed space and discharge the refrigerant into the atmosphere.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The system of claim 10, wherein the suppression component comprises a pump configured to pump an inert gas from an inert gas supply into the enclosed space.

### Claim 13 (depends on 10)

The system of claim 10, wherein the suppression component comprises a valve configured to release a dry chemical into the enclosed space.

### Claim 14 (depends on 10)

The system of claim 10, wherein the sensor comprises a chemical sensor, an optical sensor, or both.

### Claim 15 (depends on 10)

The system of claim 10, wherein the sensor is coupled to an air duct upstream from an evaporator coil of the HVAC system.

### Claim 16

A heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) combustion suppression system, comprising:
a sensor configured detect a refrigerant and/or a combustion event in an enclosed space and to emit a signal indicative of the refrigerant and/or the combustion event;
an electronic device; and
a controller configured to receive the signal from the sensor and transmit a warning message to the electronic device.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The system of claim 16, wherein the warning message comprises an audible tone, a written message, an audible message, a flashing light, or both.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

The system of claim 16, wherein the electronic device is configured to transmit a signal to the controller to activate a suppression component.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The system of claim 18, wherein the suppression component is a pump configured to pump an inert gas from an inert gas supply into the enclosed space.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The system of claim 18, wherein the suppression component comprises a valve configured to release a dry chemical into the enclosed space.

### Claim 21 (depends on 16)

The system of claim 16, wherein the electronic device comprises a mobile electronic device, a thermostat, a computer, or a combination thereof.
