## Abstract

According to one embodiment, a trocar assembly having a proximal end and a distal end comprises an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member. The inner tubular member is formed with an opening at the proximal end and an opening at the distal end, the openings adapted to provide access for one or more surgical instruments during a surgical procedure. The outer tubular member is disposed about the inner tubular member, the outer tubular member being partitioned into at least a first chamber and a second chamber, wherein: the inner tubular member is separated from the outer tubular member by an inner wall; the first chamber is separated from the second chamber; and the first chamber and the second chamber are defined by the inner wall and an outer wall of the outer tubular member.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A trocar assembly having a proximal end and a distal end, the trocar assembly comprising:
an inner tubular member formed with an opening at the proximal end and an opening at the distal end, the openings adapted to provide access for one or more surgical instruments during a surgical procedure; and
an outer tubular member disposed about the inner tubular member, the outer tubular member being partitioned into at least a first chamber and a second chamber, wherein:
the inner tubular member is separated from the outer tubular member by an inner wall;
the first chamber is separated from the second chamber; and
the first chamber and the second chamber are defined by the inner wall and an outer wall of the outer tubular member.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The trocar assembly of claim 1, wherein the outer wall comprises one or more apertures.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The trocar assembly of claim 2, wherein the one or more apertures in the outer wall are configured to permit fluid to flow into or out of the patient cavity.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The trocar assembly of claim 1, wherein the inner wall comprises one or more apertures.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The trocar assembly of claim 4, wherein the one or more apertures in the inner wall are configured to permit fluid to flow between the outer tubular member and the inner tubular member.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The trocar assembly of claim 1, wherein:
the trocar assembly further comprises a pressure monitor configured to determine a pressure of the patient cavity.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The trocar assembly of claim 1, further comprising at least one port in the outer wall, the at least one port configured to couple to a conduit.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The trocar assembly of claim 7, wherein insufflation gas is delivered to the patient cavity via the conduit.

### Claim 9 (depends on 7)

The trocar assembly of claim 7, wherein smoke is removed from the patient cavity via the conduit.

### Claim 10 (depends on 7)

The trocar assembly of claim 7, wherein the port further comprises a vacuum break.

### Claim 11 (depends on 6)

The trocar assembly of claim 6, wherein:
the pressure monitor is coupled to a cable; and
at least a portion of the cable is shielded from electromagnetic frequencies.

### Claim 12

A method comprising:
positioning a distal portion of a trocar into a patient cavity, the trocar comprising an outer tubular member disposed about an inner tubular member, the outer tubular member being partitioned into at least a first chamber and a second chamber, wherein:
the inner tubular member is separated from the outer tubular member by an inner wall;
the first chamber is separated from the second chamber;
the first chamber and the second chamber are defined by the inner wall and an outer wall of the outer tubular member;
inserting a surgical instrument into the inner tubular member; and
supplying an insufflation gas to the patient cavity through the first chamber of the outer tubular member, wherein the insufflation gas is directed to the patient cavity through one or more apertures positioned in the outer wall that partially defines the first chamber.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising:
measuring a pressure of the patient cavity using a pressure monitor.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein the pressure of the patient cavity is measured through the second chamber via a first pathway, wherein the first pathway comprises one or more apertures positioned in the outer wall that partially defines the second chamber, the one or more apertures being located at the distal portion of the trocar.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein:
the pressure of the patient cavity is measured through the second chamber via a second pathway, the second pathway comprising at least a first aperture, a second aperture, and a third aperture;
the first aperture is one of the one or more apertures in a distal end of the first chamber;
the second aperture is positioned in the inner wall that partially defines the first chamber; and
the third aperture is positioned in the inner wall that partially defines the second chamber.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

The method of claim 13, wherein:
the surgical instrument, when inserted through the inner tubular member, creates a seal such that fluid cannot escape through a proximal portion of the inner tubular member; and
the pressure of the patient cavity is measured through the inner tubular member via a port extending through the outer wall and the inner wall.

### Claim 17 (depends on 12)

The method of claim 12, further comprising removing smoke from the patient cavity via one of:
the second chamber of the outer tubular member; or
