## Abstract

An endoscopic forceps is provided and includes a housing having a shaft. An end effector assembly operatively connects to a distal end of the shaft and has a pair of first and second jaw members. One of the first and second jaw members is movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, to a clamping position. One of the first and second jaw members includes one or more cam slots defined therein and configured to receive a cam member that upon movement thereof rotates the movable jaw member from the open position to the clamping position. A resilient member is operably coupled to the jaw member that includes the one or more cam slots. The resilient member is configured to provide a camming force to the cam slot and to bias the first and second jaw members in the clamping position.

## Claims

### Claim at position 1

1-10. (canceled)

### Claim 11

An endoscopic forceps, comprising:
a housing;
a shaft that extends from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis;
an end effector assembly operatively connected to a distal end portion of the shaft and including a first jaw member and a second jaw member, at least one of the first and second jaw members being movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, wherein the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another, to a clamping position, wherein the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;
a drive element; and
a resilient member that extends from the drive element and is coupled to the first jaw member, the first jaw member pivotally coupled to the shaft by a pivot pin, the first jaw member positioned to pivot about the pivot pin in response to movement of the drive element.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 11, wherein the resilient member is a tension spring.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 12, wherein the first jaw member rotates about the pivot pin when the drive element translates in an axial direction.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 13, wherein the first jaw member rotates toward the second jaw member when the drive element translates in a proximal direction.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 14, wherein movement of the drive element in the proximal direction tensions the tension spring.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 15, wherein when the first and second jaw members are disposed in the clamping position, the tension spring is configured to generate a predetermined closure force between the first and second jaw members.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 16, wherein the predetermined closure force is in the range of about 3 kg/cm2 to about 16 kg/cm2.

### Claim 18 (depends on 11)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 11, wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a jaw housing of the first jaw member.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 18, wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a proximal end portion of the jaw housing.

### Claim 20 (depends on 12)

The endoscopic forceps of claim 12, wherein a distal end portion of the tension spring is coupled to a jaw housing of the first jaw member by a rivet, a pin, or a bolt.

### Claim 21

An electrosurgical system, comprising:
a housing;
a shaft that extends from the housing and defines a longitudinal axis;
a first jaw member and a second jaw member operatively connected to a distal end portion of the shaft, the first and second jaw members configured to couple to an electrosurgical energy source, at least one of the first and second jaw members being movable relative to the other jaw member from an open position, wherein the first and second jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another, to a clamping position, wherein the first and second jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween;
a resilient member that is coupled to the first jaw member, the first jaw member pivotally coupled to the shaft by a pivot pin; and
a drive element configured to tension the resilient member as the first jaw member rotates about the pivot pin.

### Claim 22 (depends on 21)

The electrosurgical system of claim 21, wherein the resilient member is a tension spring.

### Claim 23 (depends on 22)

The electrosurgical system of claim 22, wherein the first jaw member rotates about the pivot pin when the drive element translates in an axial direction.

### Claim 24 (depends on 23)

The electrosurgical system of claim 23, wherein the first jaw member rotates toward the second jaw member when the drive element translates in a proximal direction.

### Claim 25 (depends on 24)

The electrosurgical system of claim 24, wherein movement of the drive element in the proximal direction tensions the tension spring.

### Claim 26 (depends on 25)

The electrosurgical system of claim 25, wherein when the first and second jaw members are disposed in the clamping position, the tension spring is configured to generate a predetermined closure force between the first and second jaw members.

### Claim 27 (depends on 26)

The electrosurgical system of claim 26, wherein the predetermined closure force is in the range of about 3 kg/cm2 to about 16 kg/cm2.

### Claim 28 (depends on 21)

The electrosurgical system of claim 21, wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a jaw housing of the first jaw member.

### Claim 29 (depends on 28)

The electrosurgical system of claim 28, wherein the pivot pin is coupled to a proximal end portion of the jaw housing.

### Claim 30 (depends on 21)

The electrosurgical system of claim 21, further comprising an electrosurgical generator configured to conduct electrosurgical energy to the first and second jaw members.
