## Abstract

An implantable medical device for connecting tissue layers, such as connecting tubular tissues to create an anastomosis, includes a single elongate member and a covering material. The devices provided may also be used for other purposes including, but not limited to, partially or fully occluding openings in tissue, temporarily or permanently holding generally planar layers of tissue together, aneurysm repair, and the like.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A medical device for creating an anastomosis between a first body conduit and a second body conduit and configured to transition between contracted and expanded configurations, the device comprising:
an elongate member defining a frame comprising:
a first apposition portion and a second apposition portion; and
a central portion disposed between the first apposition portion and the second apposition portion, the central portion defining a lumen therethrough and having a diameter and a length in the contracted configuration; and
a covering material disposed on at least a portion of the central portion, the covering material being configured to allow material flow through the lumen and between the first body conduit and the second body conduit,
wherein the frame is configured such that when transitioning from the contracted configuration to the expanded configuration, the length of the central portion is configured to increase by a greater amount relative to a reduction in the diameter of the central portion.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the elongate member traverses the central portion along a helical path.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The device of claim 2, wherein the elongate member in the central portion extends along the helical path substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the device when the device is in the contracted configuration.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the elongate member is a single continuous elongate member.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The device of claim 4, wherein the single elongate member is a wire.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The device of claim 5, wherein the elongate member comprises nitinol.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the elongate member has a defined length and has a variable thickness throughout the length.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first apposition portion and the second apposition portion each include diameters that exceed the diameter of the central portion.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the first apposition portion includes a plurality of elongate wire loops that are each configured to bear a load without imparting a substantial force to any other of the plurality of elongate wire loops of the first apposition portion.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the second apposition portion includes a plurality of elongate wire loops that are each configured to bear a load without imparting a substantial force to any other of the plurality of elongate wire loops of the second apposition portion.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the covering material is configured to inhibit tissue ingrowth or endothelialization into the covering material.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the covering material is also disposed on at least a portion of the first apposition portion or the second apposition portion.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the covering material comprises expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE).

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, further comprising one or more radiopaque markers disposed on the device.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

The device of claim 1, wherein the frame further comprises one or more tissue anchorage features.

### Claim 16

A medical device for creating an anastomosis between a first body conduit and a second body conduit and configured to transition between contracted and expanded configurations, the device comprising:
an elongate member defining a frame comprising:
a first apposition portion and a second apposition portion; and
a central portion disposed between the first apposition portion and the second apposition portion, the central portion defining a lumen therethrough and having a diameter; and
a covering material disposed on at least a portion of the central portion, the covering material being configured to allow material flow through the lumen and between the first body conduit and the second body conduit,
wherein the central portion is configured such that the diameter of the central portion is substantially the same in the contracted configuration and in the expanded configuration.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

The device of claim 16, wherein the elongate member traverses the central portion along a helical path.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The device of claim 17, wherein the elongate member in the central portion extends along the helical path substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the central portion when the device is in the contracted configuration.

### Claim 19 (depends on 16)

The device of claim 16, wherein the elongate member consists of a continuous wire.

### Claim 20 (depends on 19)

The device of claim 19, wherein the continuous wire includes first and second ends that are coupled together.

### Claim 21 (depends on 19)

The device of claim 19, wherein the elongate member comprises nitinol.

### Claim 22 (depends on 16)

The device of claim 16, wherein adjacent helical portions of elongate member of the central portion contact one another in the contracted configuration.

### Claim 23 (depends on 16)

The device of claim 16, wherein a transition from the contracted configuration to the expanded configuration includes a substantially greater longitudinal extension of the central portion than a diametrical reduction of the diameter of the central portion.
