## Abstract

Provided is a process for preparing an alcoholic solution of a polyvinylpyridine polymer having biocidal and biocompatibility properties. The alcoholic solution is ready-to-graft in order to confer biocidal properties to various surfaces and to prevent biofilm formation on such surfaces. Also provided are methods of using the alcoholic solution, such as for controlling the growth of bacteria, fungi and/or viruses, and/or for preventing digestion of wood cellulose by wood-boring insects.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A one-step reaction process to prepare an alcoholic solution, the process comprising:
reacting polyvinylpyridine, monomer A and monomer B in an alcoholic solvent for a period of two days.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the monomer A is selected from the group consisting of iodopropyltrimethoxysilane and chloromethylcatechol.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the monomer B is bromobutane.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the alcoholic solvent is selected from the group consisting of methanol and ethanol.

### Claim 5 (depends on 2)

The process of claim 2, wherein the monomer A is iodopropyltrimethoxysilane.

### Claim 6 (depends on 2)

The process of claim 2, wherein the monomer A is chloromethylcatechol.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the monomer A is used in 5% fixed proportion to prevent reticulation in volume.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The process of claim 1, wherein the alcoholic solution comprises a polyvinylpyridine polymer of formula I or formula II:
wherein X is 12±2% to 45±2%.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The process of claim 8, being a process for preparing an alcoholic solution comprising the polymer of formula I, the process comprising reacting polyvinylpyridine, chloromethylcatechol, and bromobutane.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The process of claim 9, wherein X in the formula I is 44±2%.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The process of claim 9, wherein the chloromethylcatechol is used in 5% fixed proportion to prevent reticulation in volume.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The process of claim 8, being a process for preparing an alcoholic solution comprising the polymer of formula II, the process comprising reacting polyvinylpyridine, iodopropyltrimethoxysilane, and bromobutane.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The process of claim 12, wherein X in the formula II is 44±2%.

### Claim 14 (depends on 8)

The process of claim 8, wherein the alcoholic solvent is selected from the group consisting of methanol and ethanol.

### Claim 15

A method of controlling the growth of at least one of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, the method comprising depositing and grafting on an activated surface an alcoholic solution comprising a polyvinylpyridine polymer of formula I or formula II:
wherein X is 12±2% to 45±2%.

### Claim 16

A method of preventing digestion of wood cellulose by wood-boring insects, the method comprising depositing and grafting on wood cellulose an alcoholic solution comprising a polyvinylpyridine polymer of formula I or formula II:
wherein X is 12±2% to 45±2%.
