Abstract
The disclosure relates to a method of determining complexities and/or quality of video segments of a video program and providing data indicating the quality of video segments to user devices. Such data may be included in a manifest file of the video program. Based on the data indicating the complexities and/or quality of video segments, a user device or the system may choose a bitrate version for each video segment that minimizes network bandwidth usage while providing sufficient video quality.

A method comprising:
- accessing a segment, among a plurality of segments, of a video stream;
- determining a complexity of the segment;
- generating a manifest file for the video stream, wherein the manifest file comprises data indicating the complexity of the segment and data indicating a plurality of versions of the segment;
- and
- sending the manifest file to a user device.

- accessing a first version, among a plurality of versions, of a segment of a video stream;
- determining a quality of the first version;
- generating, based on the quality of the first version, an indication indicating that a second version of the segment has been deemed acceptable for presenting a predetermined video quality, wherein the second version comprises an encoding bitrate lower than an encoding bitrate of the first version;
- and
- associating the indication indicating that the second version of the segment has been deemed acceptable for presenting the predetermined video quality with an indication of the segment in a video stream description file.

- receiving a manifest file of the video stream, wherein the manifest file comprises data indicating a plurality of versions of the segment and data indicating a complexity of the segment;
