Backup and recovery of application data of an application executing in a virtual machine

A non-transitory machine readable medium having stored thereon machine executable code which when executed by a machine, causes the machine to:

• retrieve an identifier used by an application to store application data in a first storage volume;
• perform a virtual storage resolution for the identifier to determine a mapping type of a mapping used to store the application data in the first storage volume identified by the identifier;
• store metadata for a backup of the application using the identifier based upon the mapping type;
• and
• create the backup of the application data stored in the first storage volume.

A computing device comprising:

• a memory comprising machine executable code;
• and
• a processor coupled to the memory, the processor configured to execute the machine executable code to cause the processor to:
• retrieve an identifier used by an application to store application data in a first storage volume;
• perform a virtual storage resolution for the identifier to determine a mapping type of a mapping used to store the application data in the first storage volume identified by the identifier;
• store metadata for a backup of the application using the identifier based upon the mapping type;
• and
• create the backup of the application data stored in the first storage volume.
