Ferrule-less fiber optic connector

A fiber optic cable and connector assembly comprising:

• a fiber optic cable including an optical fiber;
• and
• a ferrule-less fiber optic connector mounted at an end of the fiber optic cable, the ferrule-less fiber optic connector comprising:
• a main connector body defining a distal end and an opposite proximal end, the main connector body defining a distal receptacle adjacent the distal end;
• a shutter that is movable relative to the main connector body between a first position where the shutter covers the distal receptacle and a second position where the distal receptacle is open;
• a fiber locating piece mounted within the distal receptacle, the fiber locating piece defining a fiber receiving passage through which a bare fiber portion of the optical fiber extends, the bare fiber portion including a free end portion that extends distally past the fiber locating piece, the free end portion of the optical fiber not being supported by a ferrule, the optical fiber being free to slide axially relative to the fiber locating piece;
• a fiber fixation component that mounts within the main connector body adjacent the proximal end of the main connector body, the main connector body defining a fiber buckling region located at least partially between the fiber fixation component and the fiber locating piece, the fiber fixation component defining a fiber securement passage through which the optical fiber extends, the fiber securement passage fully circumferentially surrounding the optical fiber, the fiber fixation component defining an adhesive injection port having a first end at an outer side of the fiber fixation component and a second end at the fiber securement passage, the optical fiber being axially fixed within the fiber securement passage by adhesive injected into the fiber securement passage through the adhesive injection port;
• and
• a proximal connector body in which the fiber fixation component is secured by a press-fit connection, the proximal connector body being secured in the proximal end of the main connector body by a press-fit connection.
