Abstract
A surgical handpiece nosecone having an end overmold portion and/or an internal overmold portion. The end overmold portion may be located at an end of the nosecone and compressed between the surgical handpiece housing and nosecone. The internal overmold portion may be positioned radially about the nosecone on the inner surface to provide a fluid tight seal that prevents ingress of irrigation fluid into the housing. The flue may include one or more overmold portions.
Claims20
A connection apparatus for attachment of members of a medical device, comprising:
- a nosecone having opposing first and second ends;
- a flue having opposing first and second ends, said flue having a base on said first end and an overmold portion on said second end, and wherein said overmold portion of said flue having a projection extending radially inward from an inner surface thereof;
- and
- said second end of said nosecone releasably engaging said first end of said flue.
An ultrasonic aspirator apparatus for fragmenting tissue and removing fragmented tissue, comprising:
- a surgical handpiece comprising a housing, a nosecone attached to the housing, a flue attached to the nosecone, and a transducer mounted within the housing;
- a surgical tip connected to the transducer via an internal horn;
- an irrigation system connected to the handpiece for supplying irrigation fluid adjacent the surgical site for suspending fragmented tissue;
- and
- an aspirating system connected to the handpiece for aspirating fluid and tissue fragmented at the surgical site;
- wherein the flue includes a base and one or more overmold portions defining an inner surface and an outer surface, wherein at least one of the overmold portions project inwardly from the inner surface radially about the surgical tip to provide a fluid tight seal that prevents ingress of irrigation fluid into at least a portion of the base.
A method for attaching members of a medical device, comprising:
- providing a nosecone having one or more overmold portions on opposing ends of a base;
- providing a flue having one or more overmold portions on at least one end of a base, wherein at least one of the overmold portions project radially inwardly from an inner surface of the flue;
- providing a handpiece having a body;
- providing a tip;
- connecting the nosecone to the handpiece;
- connecting the flue to the nosecone;
- and
- sealingly engaging the overmold portion of the flue projecting radially inwardly with the tip to provide a fluid tight seal that prevents ingress of irrigation fluid towards the nosecone.
