The method of claim 21, further comprising:

• selecting a plurality of second follow-up elements;
• autonomously determining whether the exhibits includes one or more of the second follow-up elements;
• responsive to determining that the response does not exhibit one or more of the first follow-up elements and that the response exhibits one or more of the second follow-up elements, continuing the eye examination by autonomously performing a second test using the head-mounted display or autonomously ending the eye examination;
• responsive to determining that the response does not exhibit one or more of the second follow-up elements:
• autonomously identifying one or more potential second causes for the response not exhibiting the one or more second follow-up elements;
• autonomously determining a second likelihood that each of the one or more second potential causes was responsible for the response not exhibiting the one or more second follow-up elements;
• and
• autonomously adapting the eye examination based on the one or more second follow-up elements not exhibited in the response, the one or more second potential causes, the second likelihood of each of the one or more second potential causes, or some combination thereof.

The method of claim 22, wherein:

• the first follow-up elements comprise first keywords, first key phrases, first key gestures, or some combination thereof;
• the second follow-up elements comprise second keywords, second key phrases, second key gestures, or some combination thereof;
• determining whether the response exhibits the one or more of the first follow-up elements comprises determining whether the response includes the one or more of the first keywords, first key phrases, first key gestures, or combination thereof;
• and
• determining whether the response exhibits the one or more of the second follow-up elements comprises determining whether the response includes the one or more of the second keywords, second key phrases, second key gestures, or combination thereof.

The method of claim 21, wherein autonomously adapting the eye examination comprises:

• modifying parameters of the second test;
• removing the second test from the eye examination;
• adding a new test to be performed during the eye examination;
• or some combination thereof.

A method for conducting an autonomous eye examination using a head-mounted display, the method comprising:

• selecting a plurality of second follow-up elements;
• identifying a first test to be performed as part of an autonomous eye examination;
• performing the first test by:
• autonomously generating a digital image for viewing by an individual via the head-mounted display;
• autonomously presenting an elicitation via the head-mounted display, and
• autonomously receiving a response provided by the individual responsive to the elicitation via the head-mounted display;
• autonomously determining whether the response exhibits one or more of the second follow-up elements;
• responsive to determining that the response exhibits one or more of the second follow-up elements, continuing the eye examination by autonomously performing a second test using the head-mounted display or autonomously ending the eye examination;
• responsive to determining that the response does not exhibit one or more of the second follow-up elements:
• autonomously identifying one or more second potential causes for the response not exhibiting the one or more second follow-up elements;
• autonomously determining a second likelihood that each of the one or more second potential causes was responsible for the response not exhibiting the one or more second follow-up elements;
• and
• autonomously adapting the eye examination based on the one or more second follow-up elements not exhibited by the response, the one or more second potential causes, the second likelihood of each of the one or more second potential causes, or some combination thereof.

The method of claim 21, wherein autonomously adapting the eye examination comprises:

• modifying parameters of the second test;
• removing the second test from the eye examination;
• adding a new test to be performed during the eye examination;
• or some combination thereof.

A system comprising:

• a processor operable to execute instructions stored in a memory;
• the memory comprising a plurality of first follow-up elements and specific instructions for autonomously conducting an eye examination using a head-mounted display, wherein execution of the specific instructions prompts the processor to:
• identify a first test to be performed as part of the eye examination;
• autonomously perform the first test using the head-mounted display;
• autonomously acquire a result for the first test;
• autonomously determine whether the result of the first test exhibits one or more of the first follow-up elements;
• responsive to determining that the result does not exhibit one or more of the first follow-up elements, continue autonomously conducting the eye examination by autonomously performing a second test using the head-mounted display or ending the eye examination;
• and
• responsive to determining that the result exhibits one or more of the first follow-up elements:
• autonomously identify one or more first potential causes for the result exhibiting the one or more of the first follow-up elements;
• autonomously determine a first likelihood that each of the one or more first potential causes was responsible for the result exhibiting the one or more of the first follow-up elements;
• and
• autonomously adapt the eye examination based on the one or more of the first follow-up elements exhibited in the result, the one or more first potential causes, the first likelihood of each of the one or more first potential causes, or some combination thereof.

The method of claim 38, wherein:

• the memory further comprises a plurality of second follow-up elements, and execution of the specific instructions further prompts the processor to:
• autonomously determine whether the result of the first test exhibits one or more of the second follow-up elements;
• responsive to determining that the result does not exhibit one or more of the first follow-up elements and that the result exhibits one or more of the second follow-up elements, continue the eye examination by autonomously performing a second test using the head-mounted display or autonomously ending the eye examination;
• responsive to determining that the result does not exhibit one or more of the second follow-up elements:
• autonomously identify one or more potential second causes for the result not exhibiting the one or more second follow-up elements;
• autonomously determine a second likelihood that each of the one or more second potential causes was responsible for the result not exhibiting the one or more second follow-up elements;
• and
• autonomously adapt the eye examination based on the one or more second follow-up elements not exhibited in the result, the one or more second potential causes, the second likelihood of each of the one or more second potential causes, or some combination thereof.

The method of claim 38, wherein:

• the result comprises a response from an individual;
• the first follow-up elements comprise first keywords, first key phrases, first key gestures, or some combination thereof;
• and
• determining whether the result exhibits the one or more of the first follow-up elements comprises determining whether the response includes the one or more of the first keywords, first key phrases, first key gestures, or combination thereof.

The method of claim 39, wherein:

• the result comprises a response from an individual;
• the first follow-up elements comprise first keywords, first key phrases, first key gestures, or some combination thereof;
• the second follow-up elements comprise second keywords, second key phrases, second key gestures, or some combination thereof;
• determining whether the result exhibits the one or more of the first follow-up elements comprises determining whether the response includes the one or more of the first keywords, first key phrases, first key gestures, or combination thereof;
• and
• determining whether the result exhibits the one or more of the second follow-up elements comprises determining whether the response includes the one or more of the second keywords, first key phrases, first key gestures, or combination thereof.

• the memory comprising a plurality of second follow-up elements and specific instructions for autonomously conducting an eye examination using a head-mounted display, wherein execution of the specific instructions prompts the processor to:

• autonomously perform the first test using the head-mounted display;

• responsive to determining that the result exhibits one or more of the second follow-up elements, continue autonomously conducting the eye examination by autonomously performing a second test using the head-mounted display or ending the eye examination;

• responsive to a determination that the result does not exhibit one or more of the second follow-up elements:
• autonomously identify one or more second potential causes for the result not exhibiting the one or more of the second follow-up elements;
• autonomously determine a second likelihood that each of the one or more second potential causes was responsible for the result not exhibiting the one or more of the second follow-up elements;
• and
• autonomously adapt the eye examination based on the one or more of the second follow-up elements not exhibited in the result, the one or more second potential causes, the second likelihood of each of the one or more second potential causes, or some combination thereof.

The method of claim 48, wherein:

• the result comprises a response from an individual;
• the second follow-up elements comprise second keywords, second key phrases, second key gestures, or some combination thereof;
• and
• determining whether the result exhibits the one or more of the second follow-up elements comprises determining whether the response includes the one or more of the second keywords, second key phrases, second key gestures, or combination thereof.

The method of claim 48, wherein autonomously adapting the eye examination comprises:

• modifying parameters of the second test;
