A reliable monitoring of a stack height to be maintained is achieved by embodying the stack marking device as a monitoring apparatus that operates based on electromagnetic beams, in particular IR radiation, and has a transmitter device that emits the beams, a receiver device that receives the beams, and an evaluation unit that processes their output signals.
