Abstract
The continuous demand for capacity and the limited available spectrum in wireless and wired communication has led to reliance on advanced modulation techniques to dramatically increase the number of bits per hertz per second. This demand in capacity and using the higher order constellations shorten the link range, and as a result, system gain becomes an important characteristic. The modulation techniques described here improve the system gain by, e.g., as much as 2.5 dB in high order modulations such as 4096-QAM. The modulation techniques include reducing the peak to average ratio and adding shaping gain. These techniques dramatically improve the system capacity, system gain, power consumption and system cost.

A system comprising:
- a peak detector operable to monitor a transmit signal to generate a signal peak;
- a modulator operable to generate the transmit signal according to a mapping of one or more bits of source data to either a first symbol or an second symbol, wherein the first symbol is determined according to a first constellation and the second symbol is determined according to an second constellation, and wherein the modulator is operable to select between the first constellation and the second constellation according to the signal peak;
- and
- a feedback circuit operable to communicate the signal peak from the peak detector to the modulator.
A method comprising:
- determining a signal peak with respect to a transmit signal;
- selecting, responsive to the signal peak, between a first modulation constellation and an second modulation constellation for shaping the transmit signal;
- mapping one or more bits of source data to a first modulation constellation symbol if the first modulation constellation is selected;
- mapping one or more bits of source data to an second modulation constellation symbol if the second modulation constellation is selected.
