Local digital token transfer during limited or no device communication

A non-transitory machine-readable medium having stored thereon machine-readable instructions executable to cause a machine to perform operations comprising:

• searching, by a first device over a short range wireless signal proximity range of the first device, for a second device storing a digital token usable for electronic transaction processing with a merchant device using a first short range wireless signal in response to determining the second device is unable to conduct a transaction with the merchant device;
• in response to detecting the second device by the first device using the first short range wireless signal, retrieving the digital token from the second device over a first short range wireless communication channel between the first device and the second device;
• connecting with the merchant device over a second short range wireless communication channel;
• and
• communicating the digital token to the merchant device over the second short range wireless communication channel.

A method comprising:

• in response to a merchant device requesting use of a first short range wireless communication protocol by devices at a merchant location associated with the merchant device, receiving, by a first device, a token retrieval request for a payment token stored to a second device at the merchant location;
• requesting, by the first device, the payment token from the second device using a second short range wireless communication protocol different from the first short range wireless communication protocol available to the second device;
• receiving, by the first device, the payment token from the second device over a communication channel using the second short range wireless communication protocol;
• and
• communicating, by the first device, the payment token to the merchant device using the first short range wireless communication protocol requested by the merchant device.
