User-Upgradeable Load Control Network

A method for installing a user-upgradeable load control network comprising:

• mounting one or more backplates to electrical junction boxes distributed throughout a building, wherein at least some of the one or more backplates includes a cavity to interchangeably accept any one of a plurality of device control assemblies, wherein at least some of the one or more backplates further include electrical contacts and a translatable cover configured to shield the electrical contacts from the cavity when translated to a closed position and to expose the electrical contacts to any of the plurality of device control assemblies upon insertion into the cavity, wherein at least some of the one or more backplates further includes a lock to allow the cover to be translated to the open position only when any of the device control assemblies are inserted into the cavity;
• connecting the electrical contacts of the one or more backplates to one or more electrical loads distributed throughout the building through wiring extending into the electrical junction boxes;
• and
• installing one or more device control assemblies of the plurality of device control assemblies into the one or more backplates by inserting the one or more device control assemblies to engage the respective locks and translating the respective covers to the open positions, wherein any of the installed device control assemblies are upgradeable by a user by translating the cover to the closed position, removing the installed device control assembly, inserting any other of the plurality of device control assemblies, and translating the cover to the open position.
