Abstract
Supplemental content related to an electronic book may be obtained by creating a search query using a keyword in selected text of the electronic book. The results of the search may be filtered to refine the result list using details about the electronic book obtained from a manifest file for the electronic book, including the location of the selected text.

A method for providing supplemental content to accompany an ebook, comprising:
- receiving, at a user device, a first user input selecting a portion of text in an ebook;
- parsing, at the user device, the portion of text to determine a keyword in the portion of text;
- generating, at the user device, a query for supplemental content based on the keyword;
- transmitting, from the user device, the query to a remote database;
- receiving, at the user device, a plurality of search results from the remote database based on the keyword;
- retrieving, at the user device, a manifest file for the ebook, wherein the manifest file indicates a title of the ebook and a chapter of the ebook from which the portion of text was selected;
- automatically selecting, at the user device, the title, based on the manifest file, as a first criterion;
- automatically selecting, at the user device, the chapter, based on the manifest file, as a second criterion;
- filtering the plurality of search results based on the first criterion and the second criterion;
- after filtering the plurality of search results based on the first criterion and the second criterion, generating for display a search result of the plurality of search results matching the first criterion and the second criterion;
- receiving, at the user device, a second user input selecting the search result;
- receiving, at the user device, a supplemental content item corresponding to the search result;
- and
- generating for display, at the user device, the supplemental content item.

A system for providing supplemental content to accompany an ebook, comprising:
- input/output (I/O) interface circuitry configured to receive a user input;
- and
- control circuitry configured to:
- receive, at a user device, a first user input selecting a portion of text in an ebook;
- parse, at the user device, the portion of text to determine a keyword in the portion of text;
- generate, at the user device, a query for supplemental content based on the keyword;
- transmit, from the user device, the query to a remote database;
- receive, at the user device, a plurality of search results from the remote database based on the keyword;
- retrieve, at the user device, a manifest file for the ebook, wherein the manifest file indicates a title of the ebook and a chapter of the ebook from which the portion of text was selected;
- automatically select, at the user device, the title, based on the manifest file, as a first criterion;
- automatically select, at the user device, the chapter, based on the manifest file, as a second criterion;
- filter the plurality of search results based on the first criterion and the second criterion;
- after filtering the plurality of search results based on the first criterion and the second criterion, generate for display a search result of the plurality of search results matching the first criterion and the second criterion;
- receive, at the user device, a second user input selecting the search result;
- receive, at the user device, a supplemental content item corresponding to the search result;
- and
- generate for display, at the user device, the supplemental content item.
