A method for producing an image display device, the image display device including an optical layered body that has a light-transmitting substrate having in-plane birefringence and an optical functional layer disposed on one surface of the light-transmitting substrate, the light-transmitting substrate having a slow axis that extends along the direction showing a greater refractive index,
- the method comprising
- disposing the optical layered body such that the slow axis of the light-transmitting substrate is in parallel with the vertical direction of a display screen of the image display device the light-transmitting substrate has a retardation Re represented by a formula:
- Re=(nx−ny)×d, in a range from 5,000 nm to 25,000 nm,
- where nx represents a refractive index in the slow axis direction of the light-transmitting substrate, ny represents a refractive index in a fast axis direction of the light-transmitting substrate, and d represents a thickness of the light-transmitting substrate, and
- and the difference between refractive indexes (nx−ny) is 0.05 or greater,
- the optical layered body further comprising
- a primer layer disposed between the light-transmitting substrate and the optical functional layer,
- wherein the primer layer is 65 to 125 nm in thickness provided that:
- the primer layer has a refractive index (np) that is greater than the refractive index (nx) in the slow axis direction of the light-transmitting substrate but that is smaller than the refractive index (nf) of the optical functional layer (nx<np<nf), or
- the primer layer has a refractive index (np) that is smaller than the refractive index (ny) in the fast axis direction of the light-transmitting substrate but that is greater than the refractive index (nf) of the optical functional layer (nf<np<ny).
