Self-orienting buried marker

A marker for burying adjacent an underground structure such that a location of the underground structure can be identified from above a ground surface, said marker comprising:

• a housing;
• a gimbal beacon retention device pivotally disposed within the housing:
• an inductance-capacitance (LC) beacon device carried by the gimbal beacon retention device, wherein the LC beacon device comprises an inductor coil and a capacitor operably connected with the inductor coil, wherein the gimbal beacon retention device comprises:
• an outer gimbal structure pivotally disposed within the housing;
• and
• an inner gimbal structure pivotally disposed within the outer gimbal structure, the inner gimbal structure comprising:
• a chassis that defines a coil bobbin having an exterior surface around which the inductor coil is wound;
• and
• a pair of opposing pivot pins extending from chassis that pivotally connect the inner gimbal structure to the outer gimbal structure,
• wherein the gimbal beacon retention device is structured and operable to orient the chassis of the inner gimbal structure and the inductor coil disposed therearound in the desired orientation relative to the ground surface regardless of the orientation of the housing relative to the ground surface.
