Abstract
A mineral-insulated cable has a non-circular cross-sectional shape that does not allow the internal wires to twist or change alignment during manufacturing of the cable.
Claims11
A mineral-insulated cable comprising:
- a metal sheath;
- a plurality of aligned, spaced wires;
- and
- a ceramic powder insulator surrounding the wires and filling the metal sheath;
- wherein the metal sheath and the ceramic powder insulator each have a non-circular cross-sectional shape.

A method of making a mineral-insulated, compacted, bendable cable having a shape that does not allow internal wires to twist or change alignment during production, the method comprising:
- inserting, into a metal starting tube having a non-circular cross-sectional shape, a plurality of starting insulators of a crushable ceramic material having a non-circular cross-sectional shape that is similar to the non-circular cross-sectional shape of the starting tube and having a plurality of aligned spaced holes each containing an electrically conductive wire;
- swaging a first end of the metal starting tube;
- crimping a second end of the metal starting tube to contain the insulators within the metal starting tube;
- performing a series of drawing processes in which, during each drawing process, the metal starting tube, the insulators, and the wires are drawn through a draw die having a draw opening shaped to match the non-circular cross-section of the metal starting tube and to reduce cross-sectional dimensions of the metal starting tube without causing the wires to twist or change alignment.
