• using a measuring system to record measurement data for determining an actual condition of the permanent way;
• using an evaluation device to detect objects along the permanent way from the measurement data;
• assigning a detected object to an object class;
• and
• storing an object class identification linked to positional data for an assigned object in a database.

A maintenance system for a permanent way for rail vehicles, the maintenance system comprising:

• a measuring system installed on a rail vehicle for recording measurement data;
• an evaluation device configured for detecting objects along the permanent way from the measurement data and for assigning a respective object to an object class;
• a database;
• and
• a data transmission system configured for transmitting the data assigned to the object to said database.
