Managing Power Consumption of a Network

A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising instructions executable by a physical processor of a computing device for managing power consumption of a network, the machine-readable storage medium comprising:

• instructions to monitor a set of network area zones of a network coverage area, each network area zone associated with a set of edge devices;
• instructions to determine, for a first network area zone of the set of network area zones, a first occupancy state based on usage of a first set of edge devices of the first network area zone;
• instructions to determine a first power consumption policy for the first network area zone based on the determined first occupancy state;
• instructions to apply, responsive to determining the first power consumption policy, the determined first power consumption policy to the first set of edge devices in the first network area zone by:
• determining a first power consumption mode for a first edge device in the first set of edge devices based on the applied first power consumption policy;
• and
• changing power consumption of the first edge device to a first power consumption mode.

A system for managing power consumption of a network, the system comprising:

• a physical processor that implements machine readable instructions that cause the system to:
• monitor a set of network area zones of a network coverage area, each network area zone associated with a set of edge devices;
• determine, for a first network area zone of the set of network area zones, a first occupancy state based on usage of a first set of edge devices of the first network area zone;
• based on the determined first occupancy state, determine a first power consumption policy for the first network area zone;
• responsive to determining the first power consumption policy, apply the determined first power consumption policy to the first set of edge devices in the first network area zone by changing a power consumption mode of a first edge device in the first set of edge devices;
• determine, for a second network area zone of the set of network area zones, a second occupancy state based on usage of a second set of edge devices of the second network area zone, where the second occupancy state is different from the first occupancy state;
• based on the determined second occupancy state, determine a second power consumption policy for the second network area zone, wherein the first power consumption policy is different from the second power consumption policy;
• responsive to determining the second power consumption policy, apply the determined second power consumption policy to the second set of edge devices in the second network area zone by changing a power consumption mode of a second edge device in the second set of edge devices.

The system of claim 16, wherein the physical processor implements machine readable instructions to cause the system to apply the first power consumption policy by:

• providing, to each edge device in the first set of edge devices, information about the determined first power consumption policy;
• determining, by the first edge device, a first power consumption mode based on the determined first power consumption policy, usage of the first edge device, and information about neighboring edge devices in the first set of edge devices;
• changing, by the first edge device, the power consumption mode of the first edge device to the first power consumption mode;
• and
• causing a change of a client device power consumption mode of the client device based on the determined first power consumption policy.
