Abstract
The present invention relates to the use of a compound which inhibits the activity of MKK4 as a medicament for the treatment of a patient suffering from an impaired liver function, to the use of a compound as a medicament for the treatment of liver failure, including acute/fulminant or chronic liver failure and/or for increasing the regeneration of liver tissue in a patient.
Claims22
A method of medical treatment, the method comprising:
- administering to a patient in need of treatment for liver failure and/or hepatocyte apoptosis, an oligonucleotide which hybridizes to mRNA with SEQ ID NO:
- 1204 under physiological conditions and inhibits mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 4 (MKK4), and wherein the oligonucleotide is administered to the patient in an amount that regenerates the patient's hepatocytes and/or protects the patient's hepatocytes from apoptosis.
A method of medical treatment for liver failure, blood purification and/or liver regeneration, the method comprising:
- culturing hepatocytes in a cell culture medium,
- contacting the hepatocytes with an oligonucleotide which hybridizes to mRNA with SEQ ID NO:
- 1204 and inhibits MKK4, and wherein the oligonucleotide is administered to the hepatocytes in an amount that regenerates the hepatocytes and/or protects the hepatocytes from apoptosis, and thereby obtaining treated hepatocytes;
- administering the treated hepatocytes to a patient in need of treatment for liver failure, liver regeneration and/or blood purification;
- and/or
- contacting the treated hepatocytes in culture with the patient's blood and then recirculating blood to the patient.
A cultured hepatocyte containing an oligonucleotide which hybridizes to mRNA with SEQ ID NO:
- 1204 and inhibits MKK4.
A method of manufacturing a medicament for treatment of liver failure, for protection of hepatocytes against apoptosis, and/or for the regeneration of hepatocytes in vivo and in vitro, the method comprising cultivating hepatocytes in a cell culture medium and contacting the hepatocytes with an oligonucleotide which hybridizes to mRNA with SEQ ID NO:
- 1204 and inhibits MKK4.
