Pseudowire clock recovery

A slave network device, comprising:

• a first slave clock;
• and
• circuitry configured to:
• receive, from a master network device via a first intervening network device, a first timing packet comprising a first transmission timestamp and a first residence time, wherein the first transmission timestamp is based on a first master clock of the master network device, wherein the first residence time corresponds to a delay of the first timing packet traversing the first intervening device;
• generate, in response to receiving the first timing packet, a first receiving timestamp based on the first slave clock;
• generate, based at least on the first transmission timestamp, the first residence time, and the first receiving timestamp, a first time difference between the first master clock and the first slave clock;
• and
• synchronize, based at least on the first time difference, the first master clock and the first slave clock.

A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions for clock synchronization in a network, the instructions, when executed by a computer processor, comprising functionality for:

• receiving, by a slave network device from a master network device via at least an intervening network device, a timing packet comprising a transmission timestamp and a residence time, wherein the transmission timestamp is based on a master clock of the master network device, wherein the residence time corresponds to a delay of the timing packet traversing the intervening device;
• generating, by the slave network device in response to receiving the timing packet, a receiving timestamp based on a slave clock of the slave network device;
• generating, based at least on the transmission timestamp, the residence time, and the receiving timestamp, a time difference between the master clock and the slave clock;
• and
• synchronizing, based at least on the time difference, the master clock and the slave clock.
