Methods, systems and media for interacting with content using a second screen device

A system for interacting with content using second screen devices, the system comprising:

• a media streaming device that includes a hardware processor that is programmed to:
• receive a stream of video content items, wherein the media streaming device is connected to a mobile device over a local area network;
• detect that a video content item in the stream of video content items contains interactive content in which the interactive content is controllable by receiving user input from the mobile device;
• determine whether the mobile device is capable of providing instructions for controlling the interactive content;
• cause the video content item containing the interactive content to be presented;
• in response to determining that the mobile device is capable of providing instructions for controlling the interactive content, transmit a notification to the mobile device while causing the video content item containing the interactive content to be presented, wherein the notification indicates that the video content item being received by the media streaming device is interactive content that can be controlled by providing one or more user inputs to the mobile device;
• receive instructions from the mobile device based on the one or more user inputs to control how an object depicted in the interactive content is presented;
• update the interactive content that contains the object based on the one or more user inputs in response to receiving the instructions;
• and
• cause the updated interactive content in an updated stream of the video content item to be presented.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing computer executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for interacting with content using second screen devices, comprising:

• receiving a stream of video content items, wherein a media streaming device is connected to a mobile device over a local area network;
• detecting that a video content item in the stream of video content items contains interactive content in which the interactive content is controllable by receiving user input from the mobile device;
• determining whether the mobile device is capable of providing instructions for controlling the interactive content;
• causing the video content item containing the interactive content to be presented;
• in response to determining that the mobile device is capable of providing instructions for controlling the interactive content, transmitting a notification to the mobile device while causing the video content item containing the interactive content to be presented, wherein the notification indicates that the video content item being received by the media streaming device is interactive content that can be controlled by providing one or more user inputs to the mobile device;
• receiving instructions from the mobile device based on the one or more user inputs to control how an object depicted in the interactive content is presented;
• updating the interactive content that contains the object based on the one or more user inputs in response to receiving the instructions;
• and
• causing the updated interactive content in an updated stream of the video content item to be presented.
