Customizing supplemental content delivery

A computer-implemented method comprising:

• receiving, from a client device at a server, a request for media items;
• detecting, in the request, metadata specifying a restriction mode for the client device;
• receiving, from the client device, at least one supplemental media item for inclusion with the media items to be delivered to the client device;
• based on the restriction mode, inserting a shell in the media items to be delivered to the client device, the shell including the at least one supplemental media item;
• and
• delivering the media items and the shell including at least one supplemental media item to the client device,
• wherein during detection of the shell during playback of the media items, at the client device, the at least one supplemental media item is played without interrupting playback of the media items.

A system comprising:

• at least one processor;
• and
• at least on memory storing instructions which when executed by the at least one processor causes the at least one processor to:
• receive, from a client device, a request for media items;
• detect, in the request, metadata specifying a restriction mode for the client device;
• receive, from the client device, at least one supplemental media item for inclusion with the media items to be delivered to the client device;
• based on the restriction mode, insert a shell in the media items to be delivered to the client device, the shell including the at least one supplemental media item;
• and
• deliver the media items and the shell including at least one supplemental media item to the client device,
• wherein during detection of the shell during playback of the media items, at the client device, the at least one supplemental media item is played without interrupting playback of the media items.

At least one non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions which when executed by at least one processor causes the at least one processor to:

• receive, from a client device, a request for media items;
• detect, in the request, metadata specifying a restriction mode for the client device;
• receive, from the client device, at least one supplemental media item for inclusion with the media items to be delivered to the client device;
• based on the restriction mode, insert a shell in the media items to be delivered to the client device, the shell including the at least one supplemental media item;
• and
• deliver the media items and the shell including at least one supplemental media item to the client device,
• wherein during detection of the shell during playback of the media items, at the client device, the at least one supplemental media item is played without interrupting playback of the media items.
