Abstract
A flexible hybrid firewall architecture that allows a mix of firewalls at end points in front of a target and at the initiator points. Groups of Priv-IDs may be created where each group is isolated from other worlds, with all firewalls controlled by a device management and security module.

A hybrid firewall apparatus comprising:
- a host module operable to originate transactions;
- an Initiator side Security Control (ISC) module connected to a firewall module and operable to attach security parameters to said transactions;
- the said firewall module connected to said ISC module and operable to filter transactions originating in said host module;
- a peripheral module connected to said firewall module and operable to process said transactions;
- a device management security control module connected to said ISC module, said firewall module and said peripheral module and operable to communicate control information to said modules.

A method of firewall protection comprising the steps of:
- originating a transaction in a host module;
- attaching security parameters to said transaction in an initiator side security control module;
- filtering said transactions in a firewall module;
- communicating control parameters to said firewall module from a device management security control module.
