Abstract

A balanced deck includes multiple subsets of value cards, each subset defined by a specific value out of multiple values, and multiple subsets of draw cards, each subset defined by a respective instruction to draw a specific number of additional cards that is different from the respective instruction of each other subset of draw cards. The first set of cards and the second set of cards are shuffled together to form the balanced deck. In use, a player can draw one or more initial cards from the deck, draw one or more additional cards from the deck based on an instruction on a draw card, and determine a score by adding one or more values associated with any drawn value cards from among the initial cards and additional cards, and/or by grouping value cards into pairs, sets of three or more, or a sequential numerical set of value cards.

Dependent claims

A method of determining action success in a role playing game, the method comprising:

assigning a meet-or-beat value to an action associated with an in-game decision or event;
with a deck comprising:
a first set of cards comprising value cards, the first set including multiple subsets of value cards, each subset of value cards defined by a specific representation of a numerical value of a plurality of values that is different from the respective numerical value of each other subset of value cards;
and
a second set of cards comprising draw cards, the second set including multiple subsets of draw cards, each subset of draw cards defined by a specific representation of an instruction to draw a specific number of additional cards that is different from the respective instruction defining each other subset of draw cards;
wherein the first set of cards and the second set of cards are shuffled together;
drawing an initial card from the deck;
in response to drawing the initial card, if the initial card is one of the draw cards, drawing the specific number of additional cards from the deck corresponding to the instruction represented on the initial card;
determining a score by adding the values associated with value cards among the initial card and additional cards;
comparing the score to the meet-or-beat value;
and
determining whether the action succeeds or fails based on the comparison.

maintaining data comprising an instance of a virtual deck of cards, the virtual deck of cards comprising:
a first set of virtual cards comprising value cards, the first set including multiple subsets of value cards, each subset of value cards defined by a specific numerical value of a plurality of values that is different from the respective numerical value of each other subset of value cards;
and
a second set of virtual cards comprising draw cards, the second set including multiple subsets of draw cards, each subset of draw cards defined by a specific instruction to draw a specific number of additional cards that is different from the respective instruction defining each other subset of draw cards;
randomly selecting an initial virtual card from the virtual deck;
in response to selecting the initial virtual card, if the initial virtual card is one of the draw cards, randomly selecting the specific number of additional virtual cards from the virtual deck corresponding to the instruction defining the initial card;
determining a score by adding the values associated with the value cards among the initial virtual card and additional virtual cards;
comparing the score to the meet-or-beat value;
determining whether the action succeeds or fails based on the comparison;
and
generating an indication that the action has succeeded or failed for presentation to a user.
