Decontaminating rock samples by thermovaporization

A method comprising:

• decontamination of a rock sample obtained from a borehole, the rock sample included in a plurality of rock samples, each obtained from the borehole, the plurality of rock samples exposed to contamination during a drilling operation to drill the borehole;
• splitting the rock sample into a first sample portion and a second sample portion;
• decontaminating the first sample portion with a solvent, wherein decontaminating at least partially removes an organic contaminant from the first sample portion;
• decontaminating the second sample portion by thermovaporization, for an initial duration of time, at an initial thermovaporization temperature below that of a cracking temperature of an organic matter carried within the rock sample;
• determining that a difference between a first pyrolysis Tmax value of the first sample portion decontaminated by the solvent and a second pyrolysis Tmax value of the second sample portion decontaminated by the thermovaporization satisfies a decontamination level threshold;
• and
• decontaminating a remainder of the plurality of rock samples by the thermovaporization in response to determining that the difference satisfies the decontamination level threshold.
