Abstract
free-piston engine power plant incorporating a first combustion cylinder having a first combustion piston, a fluid expander having an expansion cylinder with an expander piston therein, the expander piston reciprocating in unison with the first combustion piston, a bottoming cycle having a working fluid and a heat exchanger.
Claims22
A free-piston engine comprising:
- a first combustion cylinder having a first combustion piston;
- a fluid expander comprising:
- an expansion cylinder;
- and
- an expander piston;
- wherein the expander piston is capable of reciprocating in unison with the first combustion piston;
- valves;
- a bottoming cycle;
- and
- a heat exchanger adapted to transfer heat from an exhaust stream of the first combustion cylinder to a working fluid;
- wherein the fluid expander is adapted to work as an expander for a working fluid;
- and
- wherein the valves are configured to control the flow of a working fluid into and out of the fluid expander.

A free-piston gas generator power plant comprising:
- a free-piston engine;
- an exhaust channel;
- a power turbine having an exhaust line;
- a heat exchanger;
- a water supply;
- and
- an injector;
- wherein the free-piston engine is configured to supply an exhaust gas to the power turbine via the exhaust channel;
- wherein the heat exchanger is coupled to the exhaust line;
- wherein the exhaust line is arranged to heat the water supply to create steam;
- and
- wherein the injector is arranged to inject at least a portion of the steam into the exhaust channel.

A free-piston power plant comprising:
- a free-piston engine having an operating frequency;
- a power turbine;
- an exhaust channel;
- and
- an injector;
- wherein the free-piston engine is configured to supply exhaust gases to the power turbine via the exhaust channel;
- wherein the injector is configured to inject a medium into the exhaust channel at a medium injection frequency;
- and
- wherein the medium injection frequency complements the operating frequency of the free-piston engine.
