Abstract
A hood bumper device for an automotive vehicle hood is disclosed that can absorb energy from an impact to the hood. The hood bumper device can fracture under a first predetermined force and then continue to absorb additional energy as the descent of a portion of the device is slowed.
Claims20
A hood bumper comprising:
- a tower with tower legs and a tower connecting piece extending between the tower legs, wherein the tower legs are spaced apart from one another by a first distance to define a cavity therebetween;
- a base with base walls, a base floor extending between the base walls, and transition pieces extending between the base walls and the tower legs, wherein each transition piece includes a frangible area that is configured to fracture when a predetermined force is applied to the frangible area;
- an energy management protrusion extending from the base floor, wherein the energy management protrusion extends toward the cavity between the tower legs, wherein a dimension of the energy management protrusion is larger than the first distance between the tower legs.
A method of absorbing energy from an impact to an automotive hood using a hood bumper, where the hood bumper has tower legs spaced apart from one another;
- a base with base walls, a base floor extending between the base walls, and transition pieces extending between the base walls and the tower legs, wherein each transition piece includes a frangible area that is configured to fracture when a predetermined force is applied to the frangible area;
- an energy management protrusion extending from the base floor;
- the method comprising:
- applying a force greater than the predetermined force to the transition pieces through the tower legs;
- fracturing the transition pieces at the frangible areas;
- descending the tower legs onto the energy management protrusion;
- spreading the tower legs apart from one another with the energy management protrusion to absorb energy from the impact.
