Abstract
Systems and methods are disclosed for extracting a plurality of materials from a solution. These include a plurality of extraction devices. The extraction devices use a resin suspended above at least one screen, and the resin is used to extract at least one material from a fluid. A liquid is forced through the plurality of extraction devices and a separate material is extracted in each of the extraction devices. The resin is selected for each of the extraction devices and is based upon the material for which that extraction device is designed to remove from the fluid. Each of the extraction devices operate in series to remove at least one material from the fluid.
Claims16
A system of extracting molybdenum, comprising:
- a first column extractor with a first resin and configured to receive a liquid comprising molybdenum and uranium, wherein the first resin is secured in a first position using a first screen, and wherein the first column extractor is a uranium recovery column;
- a second column extractor with a second resin coupled to a first column extractor output of the first column extractor and configured to receive the liquid passed through the first column extractor, wherein the second resin is secured in a second position using a second screen, wherein the second column extractor a uranium polishing column;
- and
- a third column extractor with a third resin coupled to a second column extractor output of the second column extractor and configured to receive the liquid passed through the second column extractor and to receive a primary eluate comprising a brine, wherein the third resin is secured in a third position using a third screen, wherein the third column extractor comprises less resin than the second column extractor and is a molybdenum polishing column,
- wherein the molybdenum is precipitated from the primary eluate.
A method, comprising:
- passing a solution comprising uranium and molybdenum through a uranium recovery column with a first resin creating a second solution;
- passing the second solution through an uranium polishing column with a second resin, wherein the uranium polishing column comprises less resin than the uranium recovery column creating a third solution, wherein the third solution comprises molybdenum and substantially less uranium than the solution;
- passing the third solution through a molybdenum recovery column with a third resin, wherein the third column comprises less resin than uranium recovery column creating a fourth solution, and adding an eluate to the molybdenum recovery column;
- and
- precipitating molybdenum from the eluate.
An apparatus comprising:
- an uranium recovery column comprising a first resin;
- an uranium polishing column comprising a second resin;
- and
- a molybdenum polishing column comprising a third resin, wherein the molybdenum polishing column comprises less resin than the uranium polishing column,
- wherein an output of the uranium recovery column is coupled to the uranium polishing column and an output of the uranium polishing column is coupled to the molybdenum polishing column, wherein the uranium recovery column is configured to receive a fluid comprising uranium and molybdenum, wherein the uranium polishing column is configured to receive the liquid after passed through the uranium recovery column, wherein the molybdenum recovery column is configured to receive the fluid after passed through the uranium polishing column and to receive a primary eluate comprising a brine, and wherein the molybdenum is precipitated from the primary eluate after passing the fluid through the uranium recovery column, the uranium polishing column, and the molybdenum polishing column and the primary eluate through the molybdenum recovery column.
