Claims62
An acetabular component comprising a hybrid bearing surface, wherein said component comprises:
- a) a polar bearing, wherein said polar bearing comprises an interior surface;
- and
- b) a rim bearing, wherein said rim bearing comprises an interior surface,
- wherein said interior surface of said polar bearing and said interior surface of said rim bearing form said hybrid bearing surface, wherein a distal portion of a proximal femoral head in its normal position contacts both said interior surface of said polar bearing and said interior surface of said rim bearing, and wherein said polar bearing and said rim bearing are shaped to fit into an acetabular cup.
An acetabular prosthesis comprising a hybrid bearing surface, wherein said prosthesis comprises:
- a) an acetabular cup comprising a morse taper present about an inner circumference of said acetabular cup;
- b) a polar bearing for fitting within said acetabular cup, wherein said polar bearing comprises an interior surface and a circumferential outer edge that fits against said morse taper of said acetabular cup;
- b) a rim bearing for fitting above said polar bearing, wherein said rim bearing comprises an interior surface, wherein said interior surface of said polar bearing and said interior surface of said rim bearing form said hybrid bearing surface, wherein said rim bearing radially displaces outward against said acetabular cup to secure said polar bearing within said acetabular cup;
- and
- c) a locking component for securing said polar bearing and said rim bearing within said acetabular cup.
An acetabular component comprising a hybrid bearing surface, wherein said component comprises:
- a) a polar bearing, wherein said polar bearing comprises an interior surface;
- b) a rim bearing, wherein said rim bearing comprises an interior surface, wherein said interior surface of said polar bearing and said interior surface of said rim bearing form said hybrid bearing surface, wherein said polar bearing and said rim bearing are shaped to fit into an acetabular cup;
- and
- c) a locking component for securing said polar bearing and said rim bearing within said acetabular cup.
A locking component for securing a polar bearing and an arc-shaped rim bearing within an acetabular cup, wherein said locking component fits between the ends of said arc-shaped rim bearing.
A method for installing in a patient, a prosthesis comprising a hybrid bearing surface acetabular component, said method comprising:
- a) installing an acetabular cup in an acetabulum of said patient;
- b) inserting a polar bearing comprising an interior surface into said acetabular cup;
- c) inserting a rim bearing comprising an interior surface into said acetabular cup, wherein said interior surface of said polar bearing and said interior surface of said rim bearing form said hybrid bearing surface, and
- d) aligning and reducing a femoral head of a femoral component, wherein a distal portion of said femoral head in its normal position contacts both said polar bearing and said rim bearing.
A method for installing in a patient, a prosthesis comprising a hybrid bearing surface acetabular component, said method comprising:
- a) installing an acetabular cup in an acetabulum of said patient;
- b) inserting a polar bearing comprising an interior surface into said acetabular cup;
- c) placing an apron about the rim of said acetabular cup;
- d) placing a rim bearing comprising an interior surface around a femoral neck;
- e) attaching a femoral head to said femoral neck to form a femoral component;
- f) inserting said rim bearing and said femoral component into said acetabular cup, wherein said interior surface of said polar bearing and said interior surface of said rim bearing form said hybrid bearing surface;
- g) aligning and reducing said femoral head of said femoral component, wherein a distal portion of said femoral head in its normal position contacts both said polar bearing and said rim bearing;
- h) removing said apron;
- i) positioning said rim bearing in said acetabular cup;
- and
- j) securing said rim bearing in said acetabular cup.
A rim bearing insertion tool for inserting a rim bearing above a polar bearing of an acetabular component, wherein said tool comprises:
- a) means for removably securing said tool to said acetabular cup;
- b) means for reversibly engaging said rim bearing onto said tool for placement into said acetabular cup;
- c) means for reducing an effective diameter of said rim bearing;
- d) means for inserting said rim bearing into said acetabular cup;
- and
- e) means for mutually aligning said rim bearing and a locking component to place said locking component in a location suitable for insertion and locking of said rim bearing.
A method of installing a prosthesis using a rim bearing tool, said method comprising:
- a) removably securing said tool to an acetabular cup installed in a patient;
- b) reversibly engaging said rim bearing onto said tool;
- c) reducing an effective diameter of said rim bearing;
- d) inserting said rim bearing into said acetabular cup;
- e) mutually aligning said rim bearing and a locking component;
- and
- f) placing said locking component in a suitable location to lock said rim bearing.
An acetabular component comprising a hybrid bearing surface, wherein said component comprises:
- a) a polar bearing, wherein said polar bearing comprises an interior surface;
- b) a rim bearing, wherein said rim bearing comprises an interior surface, wherein said interior surface of said polar bearing and said interior surface of said rim bearing form said hybrid bearing surface, wherein said polar bearing and said rim bearing are shaped to fit into an acetabular cup;
- and
- wherein said acetabular component allows for elastic and/or plastic deformation of said rim bearing without substantial plastic deformation of a femoral head at physiological loading.
