## Abstract

Automated alert system software may interface with an electronic medical records (EMR) system and provide interested individuals with immediate notifications of critical changes during a patient's course of treatment in a hospital. This may reduce or minimize the amount of time it takes to notify families of critical moments during a hospital admission, for example. The automated alert system software may interface with the hospital EMR system by directly reading and extracting the necessary information from the database, such as the patient name and emergency contact information.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system, comprising:
a medical professional workstation configured to run a hospital emergency medical records (EMR) application and an EMR message monitor application;
an application server configured to run a server-side automated alert application that operates in concert with the EMR message monitor application; and
a user device configured to run a user automated alert application that operates in concert with the server-side automated alert application, wherein
the EMR message monitor application is configured to interface with the hospital EMR application and monitor for one or more changes a condition of a patient that require notification of an authorized individual associated with the user device.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the EMR message monitor application monitors for the one or more changes in the condition of the patient by monitoring one or more vital signs of the patient.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein when the one or more changes in the condition of the patient that require notification of the authorized individual associated with the user device, the EMR message monitor application is configured to execute a notification procedure by transmitting a message comprising information pertaining to the one or more changes in the condition of the patient to the server-side automated alert application.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The system of claim 3, wherein the information is in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format, the information comprising a practitioner name, a callback number, a message, an urgency, contact information, and a patient name.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the EMR message monitor application monitors for patient condition changes by periodically scanning the EMR application for detected changes in a time stamp, searching for changes in a patient treatment team, a patient treatment regimen, changes in patient location, or any combination thereof.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The system of claim 5, wherein
the EMR message monitor application periodically scans the EMR application for changes by making calls to the EMR application using a “fetch all” process for desired resources that have changed, and
when a change is detected, the EMR message monitor application is configured to execute a notification procedure by contacting the server-side automated alert application.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein when changes to the patient's condition are entered in the EMR application, the EMR application is configured to automatically inform the EMR message monitor application via a push notification or via a thread process that is constantly listening, and the EMR message monitor application is configured to then execute a notification procedure by contacting the server-side automated alert application.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein
when a change is detected by the EMR message monitor application, the EMR message monitor application is configured to execute a notification procedure by sending a message to the server-side automated alert application, and
the server-side automated alert application is configured to:
receive and process the message from the EMR message monitor application, and
send a notification to the user automated alert application running on the user device.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the message from the EMR message monitor application comprises a patient name, a message indirectly indicating a medical condition change without violating HIPAA, and contact number(s) of interested individuals.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the user automated alert application is configured to automatically place an outbound call to the medical professional workstation so an authorized individual associated with the user device can communicate with medical staff.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the server-side automated alert application is configured to prioritize notifications based on urgency.

### Claim 12

A computer-implemented method, comprising:
monitoring, by an emergency medical records (EMR) message monitor application, for one or more changes a condition of a patient that require notification of an authorized individual associated with a user device;
when one or more changes in the patient's condition are detected that require notification of the authorized individual associated with the user device, executing a notification procedure, by the EMR message monitor application, by transmitting a message comprising information pertaining to the one or more changes in the condition of the patient to a server-side automated alert application.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The computer-implemented method of claim 12, further comprising:
receiving and processing the message from the EMR message monitor application, by the server-side automated alert application; and
sending a notification to the user automated alert application running on the user device, by the server-side automated alert application.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The computer-implemented method of claim 13, further comprising:
receiving the notification from the server-side automated alert application, by the user automated alert application; and
automatically placing an outbound call to a medical professional workstation, by the user automated alert application, so the authorized individual associated with the user device can communicate with medical staff.

### Claim 15

A computer-implemented method, comprising:
detecting a patient condition change in an emergency medical records (EMR) application, by an EMR message monitor application; and
sending a message to a server-side automated alert application running on an application server that comprises information about detected patient condition change, by the EMR message monitor application.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The computer-implemented method of claim 15, wherein the message comprises a payload that provides an optional message to an authorized individual's device.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

The computer-implemented method of claim 15, further comprising:
receiving and processing the message, by a server-side automated alert application; and
sending an alert, by the server-side automated alert application, to a user device, wherein
the alert comprises a text message, a robocall, an email, a trigger to an alert application running on the user device, or any combination thereof.

### Claim 18 (depends on 17)

The computer-implemented method of claim 17, further comprising:
processing the alert, by the alert application running on the user device; and
initiating an emergency contact procedure, by the alert application running on the user device.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The computer-implemented method of claim 18, wherein the alert application running on the user device allows an authorized individual to cancel a request for authorized individuals to come to a hospital once contact has been made.

### Claim 20 (depends on 18)

The computer-implemented method of claim 18, wherein the emergency contact procedure further comprises:
waiting a predetermined amount of time for a callback, by the EMR message monitor application;
when no callback is received in the predetermined amount of time, calling a next authorized individual, by the EMR message monitor application;
repeating this process until a callback is received or all authorized individuals have been called and timed out, by the EMR message monitor application.
