## Abstract

A system level search module receives system level search user interface registration information for an application of the computing device. The registration information includes an indication of how the system level search module can launch the application. The registration information is added to a registration store, and the application is included as one of one or more applications that can be searched using the system level search user interface.

## Claims

### Claim 1

One or more computer storage media having stored thereon multiple instructions of a system level search module that, when executed by one or more processors of a computing device, cause the one or more processors to:
receive, for an application of the computing device, system level search user interface registration information;
add the system level search user interface registration information to a registration store; and
include the application as one of one or more applications that can be searched using a system level search user interface.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 1, wherein the multiple instructions further cause the one or more processors to:
receive, for each of multiple additional applications of the computing device, system level search user interface registration information;
add, for each of the multiple additional applications of the computing device, the received system level search user interface registration information to the registration store; and
include at least one of the multiple additional applications as ones of the one or more applications that can be searched using the system level search user interface.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 2, wherein the one or more applications that can be searched using the system level search user interface comprise multiple applications, and wherein the multiple instructions further cause the one or more processors to:
generate a ranking for each of multiple applications; and
display, in accordance with the rankings of the multiple applications, identifiers of the multiple applications in an order from a highest ranking to a lowest ranking.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 3, wherein the multiple instructions further cause the one or more processors to select which of the multiple additional applications are to be included as ones of the multiple applications that can be searched using the system level search user interface based on the rankings of each of the multiple additional applications, and wherein each of the multiple applications has a higher ranking than each of the multiple additional applications that is not included in the multiple applications.

### Claim 5 (depends on 3)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 3, wherein to generate the ranking is to generate the ranking for each of the multiple applications based on metadata included as part of the registration information of the multiple applications.

### Claim 6 (depends on 3)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 3, wherein to generate the ranking is to generate the ranking for each of the multiple applications based on data regarding usage of each of the multiple applications.

### Claim 7 (depends on 3)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 3, wherein to generate the ranking is to generate the ranking for each of the multiple applications based on where a web domain of each of the multiple applications appears in search results returned from an Internet search engine searching for a particular search term.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 1, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes an indication of how the application is to be launched, by the system level search module, to display search results in response to a search term entered by a user via the system level search user interface.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 1, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes a name to be displayed to identify the application in the system level search user interface.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 1, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes an icon to be displayed to identify the application in the system level search user interface.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 1, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes an indication that the computing device is required to have an Internet connection for the application to be included as one of one or more applications that can be searched using a system level search user interface.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 1, wherein to receive the system level search user interface registration information is to receive the system level search user registration information from an installer application on behalf of the application.

### Claim 13

One or more computer storage media having stored thereon multiple instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a computing device, cause the one or more processors to:
identify, for an application, system level search user interface registration information that includes an indication of how a system level search module providing a system level search user interface can launch the application; and
communicate the system level search user interface registration information to the system level search module so that the application is included as one of one or more applications that can be searched using the system level search user interface.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 13, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes one or both of a name and an icon to be displayed to identify the application in the system level search user interface.

### Claim 15 (depends on 13)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 13, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes an indication of an application category that the application is classified as.

### Claim 16 (depends on 13)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 13, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes an indication of how the application is to be launched, by the system level search module, to display search results in response to a search term entered by a user via the system level search user interface.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 16, wherein the system level search user interface registration information includes an indication of how a search term entered by a user via the system level search user interface is to be provided to the application.

### Claim 18 (depends on 13)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 13, wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to invoke the system level search module to display the system level search user interface.

### Claim 19 (depends on 13)

One or more computer storage media as recited in claim 13, wherein the one or more instructions comprise the application.

### Claim 20

A method in a computing device, the method comprising:
identifying multiple applications that can be searched via a system level search user interface;
generating a ranking for each of the multiple applications, the ranking of each of the multiple applications being based at least in part on whether the application is assigned to a same category of applications as a currently active application of the computing device, and being further based at least in part on one or both of how frequently the application is selected as an application to be searched via the system level search user interface and how recently the application was selected as an application to be searched via the system level search user interface;
selecting one or more of the multiple applications to be identified via the system level search user interface, each of the selected ones of the multiple applications having a ranking higher than ones of the multiple applications that are not selected; and
displaying, as part of the system level search user interface, identifiers of the selected ones of the multiple applications in an order from a highest ranking to a lowest ranking.
