A process for manufacturing nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) ester, the process comprising treating, at a temperature between 40 and 110° C., NCC with acetic acid and at least one ester source selected from acid anhydride, at least one carboxylic acid, at least one carboxylate and at least one acyl halide, in the presence of sulfuric acid, wherein the amount of the sulfuric acid is between 0.01% and 1%, compared to the weight of NCC.
A formulation comprising NCC and xyloglucan.
