Abstract
A safety system for powered cutting tools is disclosed. The safety system comprises a number of component devices that may be used alone or in combination to substantially reduce the risk of injury to the operator of the power cutting tool. The devices are designed for use with table saws, miter saws, jointers, routers, shapers and similar equipment. The devices secure a work piece against unanticipated movement and kickback while simultaneously protecting the operator's hands. The devices further enhance the capabilities of power equipment to make precise cuts safer, faster and easier.
Claims25
A miter saw safety device, comprising:
- a support member adapted to attach to a miter saw, the support member having an upright first portion and an arm extending horizontally outwardly from the first portion, the arm having a distal end spaced from the first portion, the arm having a bottom edge wherein the bottom edge is vertically spaced from the table of the miter saw to form a gap between the bottom edge and the table when installed;
- and
- a first safety plate having a first end and a second end, the first safety plate connected to the arm with the first end positioned distally beyond the distal end of the arm, the first safety plate repositionable relative to the arm.
In combination:
- a miter saw having a work piece supporting surface, a base, a guide fence and a pivoting saw blade assembly;
- a first safety device comprising:
- a base plate configured to removably mount to the miter saw on a first side of the saw blade;
- a support arm pivotally mounted to the base plate, the support arm having a first portion extending vertically from the base plate and a second portion extending horizontally from the vertical portion;
- a first safety plate having a first end and a second end, the first safety plate connected to the arm with the first end positioned distally beyond the distal end of the arm, the first safety plate repositionable relative to the arm.
A safety device configured for use with a miter saw, comprising:
- a support arm having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion adapted to be affixed to the rotating table of a miter saw on one side of the miter saw when the miter saw is in a cutting position, the second portion extending horizontally from the first portion toward the guide fence of the miter saw and terminating at a distal end;
- a first safety plate affixed to and extending vertically below the second portion of the support arm, the first safety plate having a first end and a second end, the second end extending horizontally beyond the distal den of the second portion of the support arm.
A miter saw safety device, comprising:
- a support arm having a first proximal end and a second distal end, the first end adapted to pivotally attach to a miter saw, the second end extending toward the guide fence of a miter saw and defining a gap between a bottom edge of the support arm and the work piece support surface of a miter saw when the support arm is attached to the miter saw;
- and
- a first safety plate having a first proximal end and a second distal end, the first safety plate connected to the support arm with the second distal end positioned distally beyond the distal second end of the support arm, the first safety plate repositionable relative to the arm.
