Abstract
A sanding device, for, e.g., cosmetic and finishing applications, is provided. The sanding device includes a wire mesh having a plurality of apexes, the apexes having an abrasive affixed thereto. The wire mesh forms a substantially planar surface with a bent perimeter section. The sanding device further includes a rim made from a plastic material, the plastic material capping the bent perimeter section of the wire mesh and further extending from the bent perimeter section. The wire mesh and the rim defining a shallow bowl shape. The sanding devices also includes a carrier shell or grip received and captured with the bowl shape.
Claims14
An apparatus comprising:
- a wire mesh having a plurality of apexes on a first surface thereof;
- a resin material partially coating the wire mesh, the apexes being free of the resin material;
- an abrasive material bonded to the wire mesh at the apexes;
- a rim encapsulating the perimeter of the wire mesh;
- and
- a grip attached to the rim and wire mesh at a second surface of the wire mesh opposite the first surface thereof.
A cosmetic sanding device comprising
- a wire mesh having a plurality of apexes, the apexes having an abrasive affixed thereto;
- the wire mesh forming a substantially planar surface with a bent perimeter section;
- a rim made from a plastic material, the plastic material capping the bent perimeter section of the wire mesh and further extending from the bent perimeter section, the wire mesh and the rim defining a shallow bowl shape;
- and
- a carrier shell being received and captured with the bowl shape.
A method for manufacturing a sanding screen, the sanding screen including a wire mesh the wire mesh having a plurality of apexes, the method comprising:
- sandwiching the wire mesh in a mold, the mold including first and second mold plates, the first mold plate being relatively rigid as to the wire mesh and the second mold plate being relatively deformable as to the wire mesh;
- applying a mold pressure such that the flexible mold plate deforms and covers at least a portion of the apexes of the wire mesh;
- injecting a resin into the mold, the resin encapsulating the wire mesh uncovered by the flexible mold plate free;
- removing the wire mesh encapsulated with resin from the mold;
- and
- affixing an abrasive to the exposed apexes of the wire mesh free of the resin.
The method as in claim 14 wherein the abrasive material is plated to the apex sections not encapsulated by the resin.
