Abstract
A torch for fabricating optical fiber preforms may include a body having a surface and two or more slit-shaped orifices oriented parallel or substantially parallel to each other along the surface. The torch body may further include two or more conduits connected to corresponding orifices. The torch may be used by orienting it relative to a preform substrate, and simultaneously emitting two or more gases from corresponding orifices toward the surface of the preform substrate, such that the gases are involved in a reaction to form a soot.
Claims24
A torch for fabricating optical fiber preforms, comprising:
- a torch body having a surface and plurality of slit-shaped orifices oriented substantially parallel to each other along the surface, the torch body further including a plurality of conduits, a proximal end of each conduit coupled to a different one of the slit-shaped orifices.
A torch for fabricating optical fiber preforms, comprising:
- a first conduit having a proximal end defining a first slit-shaped orifice;
- and
- a second conduit having a proximal end defining a second slit-shaped orifice, the first and second slit-shaped orifices oriented substantially parallel to each other along a surface.
A method for using a torch in making optical fiber preforms, the torch having a plurality of slit-shaped orifices oriented substantially parallel to each other along a surface of the torch, the method comprising:
- disposing the torch in an orientation with the surface of the torch substantially parallel to a surface of a preform substrate;
- and
- simultaneously emitting a first gas from a first slit-shaped orifice and a second gas from a second slit-shaped orifice toward the surface of the preform substrate with the torch in the orientation, wherein the first and second gases emitted from the first and second slit-shaped orifices are involved in a reaction to form a soot on the surface of the preform substrate.
