Abstract
Provided herein are non-naturally occurring microbial organisms having increased xylose metabolism and increased production of ethanol using xylose as a substrate, as well as methods to make and use these microbial organisms to produce ethanol.
Claims34
A non-naturally occurring microbial organism comprising a xylose-ethanol pathway and at least one exogenous nucleic acid encoding an enzyme or protein expressed in a sufficient amount to confer or enhance xylose uptake or metabolism, wherein said enzyme or protein has an amino acid sequence that is at least 89% identical to a Metschnikowia enzyme or protein selected from the group consisting of a xylose transporter, a xylose reductase, a xylose dehydrogenase and a xylulokinase.
