Massive file and data object replicator

A media storage device comprising:

• a processor configuring a replicator to
• read a media file;
• create a private copy of the media file in response to a replication request, the replication request specifying a convention for generating a reference for the private copy of the media file;
• write the private copy of the media file to a storage server of a plurality of distributed storage servers of a distributed file system;
• generate the reference for the private copy of the media file based on the convention and the storage server;
• and
• transmit metadata to the distributed file system, the metadata indicating the reference for the private copy of the media file.

A method for file storage comprising:

• reading a media file from a distributed file system;
• creating a plurality of private copies of the media file in response to a replication request, the replication request specifying a convention for generating a reference for each of the plurality of private copies of the media file;
• writing the plurality of copies of the media file to a plurality of distributed storage servers of the distributed file system;
• generating metadata indicating the reference for each of the plurality of copies of the media file based on the convention specified in the replication request and the plurality of distributed storage servers;
• and
• transmitting the metadata to the distributed file system.
