Abstract
Disclosed is a system and method for optimization of data transfer to a software service. In exemplary embodiments, a computer-implemented method for determining a transit appliance for data traffic to a software service through one or more interconnected networks comprising a plurality of network appliances, comprises determining performance metrics for each of the plurality of network appliances to at least one IP address associated with the software service, and selecting a transit appliance for data transfer to the IP address, the selected transit appliance based at least in part on the performance metrics.
Claims20
A computer-implemented method for selecting a peer egress appliance for data traffic to a software service through a network comprising a plurality of inter-connected ingress and egress network appliances, the method comprising:
- measuring one or more performance metrics of data traffic from at least two of the plurality of network appliances to an IP address associated with a software service, the IP address for the software service having been retrieved from a service directory;
- determining a derived performance metric for each network appliance to the IP address associated with the software service, the derived performance metric based at least in part on the measured one or more performance metrics;
- selecting a peer egress appliance for data traffic to the IP address associated with the software service, the selection based at least in part on the determined derived performance metrics for each network appliance.
A computer-implemented method for determining a peer transit appliance from a plurality of network appliances forming an overlay network for data traffic to a software service, the method comprising:
- receiving at a first appliance of the plurality of network appliances at least one data packet sent by a user and destined for a software service;
- extracting a destination IP address for the software service from the at least one data packet;
- determining that the extracted destination IP address is in an advertised metric table at the first appliance, the advertised metric table comprising an advertised performance metric for at least two network appliances of the plurality of network appliances to each available software service;
- querying the advertised metric table at the first appliance for the peer transit appliance for the extracted destination IP address associated with the software service;
- and
- transmitting the data packets to the peer transit appliance, the peer transit appliance being a second network appliance of the plurality of network appliances.
A non-transitory processor-readable medium having embodied thereon instructions being executable by at least one processor to perform a method for optimization of network traffic to a software service within a wide area network, the method comprising:
- measuring one or more performance metrics of data traffic from at least two of a plurality of network appliances to an IP address associated with a software service, the IP address for the software service having been retrieved from a service directory;
- determining a derived performance metric for each network appliance to the IP address associated with the software service, the derived performance metric based at least in part on the one or more measured performance metrics;
- selecting a transit appliance for data traffic to the IP address associated with the software service, the selection based at least in part on the determined derived performance metric for each network appliance.
A computer system for optimization of network traffic to a software service within a wide area network, the system comprising:
- a first appliance comprising at least one processor and a memory storing instructions, the instructions executable by the at least one processor to:
- retrieve a service directory from a portal, the service directory comprising information regarding a plurality of available software services,
- measure one or more performance metrics for data traffic to an IP address associated with a software service in the service directory,
- determine a derived performance metric to be advertised to a second appliance, the derived performance metric based at least in part on the one or more measured performance metrics, and
- determine a transit appliance for network traffic to the software service from an advertised metric table, the transit appliance having a best advertised performance metric.
