Abstract
A mold for making dry cast concrete blocks includes a pair of vertical shoulder forming sections, one along each of the opposite sides of the mold to form vertical front shoulders of a block. Each shoulder forming section has a shoulder roughening arrangement to result in molded, roughened shoulders of the block. Methods of making such blocks and the resulting block are included.
Claims20
A molded dry cast concrete block comprising:
- (a) a front surface and an opposite back surface;
- (b) opposite upper and lower surfaces extending between the front and back surfaces;
- a distance between the upper and lower surfaces defining a block height;
- (c) first and second opposite sidewalls extending from the back surface and between the upper and lower surfaces;
- and
- (d) at least one shoulder along the front surface of the block and extending vertically from the upper surface to the lower surface of the block, the shoulder resulting from a shoulder forming section of a mold part, the shoulder being roughened to have a relief between 0.09 inch and 0.125 inch;
- the roughening of the shoulder resulting from a recess in the shoulder forming section extending between about 25% and about 50% of the block height;
- wherein the shoulder forming section has at least two spaced ribs in the recesses, each rib extending in a direction across the width of the recess and being inclined relative to both the vertical axis and the width of the recess, the at least two spaced ribs together extending across the width of the recess.

A pre-split molded dry cast concrete block pair comprising:
- (a) a first block form having a rear surface and first and second opposite sidewalls extending from the rear surface;
- (b) a second block form having a rear surface and first and second opposite sidewalls extending from the rear surface in a direction toward the first block form;
- (c) a top surface between the first block form rear surface and second block form rear surface;
- (d) a bottom surface, opposite of the top surface, between the first block form rear surface and second block form rear surface;
- (e) first and second rounded, roughened shoulders defining a gap therebetween;
- the first shoulder being at the end of the first block form first sidewall, and the second shoulder being at the end of the second block form first sidewall;
- and
- (f) third and fourth rounded, roughened shoulders defining a gap therebetween;
- the third shoulder being at the end of the first block form second sidewall, and the fourth shoulder being at the end of the second block form second sidewall.

A wear plate for forming a rounded vertical shoulder of a dry cast concrete block, the wear plate comprising:
- (a) a plate body having a top edge and bottom edge, a molding face between the top and bottom edges, an outside face opposite of the molding face, and a side bridging the molding face and outside face;
- (i) the molding face defining at least one concave shaped molding surface for forming a rounded shoulder and including a recess;
- (ii) the recess extending from adjacent the bottom edge of the plate body and extending upward between about 25% and about 50% of the height of the plate body;
- (iii) the concave shaped molding surface having a smooth section and a roughening section, the roughening section being within the recess;
- and
- (iv) at least two spaced ribs in the roughening section, each rib extending in a direction across the width of the recess and being inclined relative to the side of the plate body.
